Yet another road caves in, this time near CM's house

Racing to meet deadlines for the Commonwealth Games, the MCD and NDMC officials are having a tough time as bad weather is causing a host of problems for them. Wednesday witnessed another major road cave-in incident, the third of its kind in the Lutyens' Zone.

The latest incident occurred on Rajesh Pilot Marg just opposite The Claridges. Among dignitaries living within 500-metre-radius of the hole on the road include Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit apart from Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.

The road caved in at around 6 am and by 4:30 pm the MCD officials were trying to fix it. Skeleton traffic was allowed to move on the road, which remained closed to vehicles for the major part of the day.

Even the NDMC blamed it on luck. "It is our bad luck that it keeps happening in the VVIP area. We are yet to find out as to why the road caved in but we are trying our best to fix it. The hole caused due to cave-in was originally 1.5 feet but we further dug around it to ensure that it should not happen again," said Anand Tiwari, spokesperson, NDMC.

"There was a problem underneath with a sewage pipeline and some leakage which eventually led to this cave-in. Media is trying to hype up even the slightest of incidents. These roads were built long time back and since it is raining these days there are possibilities of such instances," said an official associated with repairing roads. In the last two weeks, the national capital has seen three major roads caving in. First on August 8 near Khan Market, then on August 17 on Jaswant Singh Road.
