US President Barack Obama played a round with Tiger Woods on Sunday, crowning a buddies golf trip with his long-awaited first match-up with the 14-time major champion

“The President said to Tiger, “The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It’s good to see you play well again’,” Harmon was quoted as saying. Woods left the course after 18 holes while Obama played another nine. Golf World’s Tim Rosaforte, who first reported the match-up, told The Golf Channel that Woods holed out from a bunker for a birdie at the first hole, despite never having seen the Floridian resort course before.

Meanwhile, World No 1 Rory McIlroy and No 2 Woods will face familiar foes in the opening round of the World Golf Championships Match Play Championship tomorrow in Los Angeles.

McIlroy heads the Bobby Jones quarter of the draw and will face 64th seed Shane Lowry, while Woods, top seed in the Gary Player quarter, will face Charles Howell. World No 3 Luke Donald, who won the title in 2011, heads the Sam Snead quarter and will open against Germany’s Marcel Siem.u00a0
