French rider Thomas Voeckler of the Europcar team retained the race leader's yellow jersey in the Tour de France after stage 17 yesterday despite going off the road in the final descent.

The hilly 179km stage from Gap to Pinerolo was won by Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen of the Sky team, who beat Dutch rider Bauke Mollema by 40 seconds.

France's Sandy Casar was third 50sec off the pace ahead of compatriots Julien El Fares and Sylvain Chavanel.
