In doing so, Nowitzki beat the Miami club that had denied him in 2006.

He beat Dwyane Wade, who had questioned his leadership abilities after that series.

And he beat LeBron James, who had this week joined Wade on camera, mocking Nowitzki for the illness and injury he had suffered during this series.

The emotions were such that after the final buzzer, Nowitzki bolted for the locker rooms where he cried alone until being dragged back out by teammates for the presentations.

"We're world champions," the Germany international said once he had finally composed himself. "It sounds unbelievable. It feels amazing to know that nobody can ever take this away from us."

Jason Terry had led Dallas with 27 points in the final game, but Nowitzki, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds, had led them with gutsy performances throughout, inspiring comebacks from 12, nine and four points down in their previous victories and earning the Finals MVP award.

That was despite him playing with a torn tendon in his left hand, suffered in the opening game, and battling a sinus infection for much of the series. Plenty had been made of his various ailments, not least by Heat players who had appeared in a video over the past few days pretending to cough and splutter as they mocked Nowitzki.

"Our guys took it personally tonight," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "They were not going to be denied."
