A referee sent off six members of a football team following a row over the colour of their underpants.

Trouble kicked off midway through the first half of an FA Youth Cup clash between Newport County and Bath City Academy.

Ref Darren Adie noticed one of the Bath players had white cycling pants showing under the team's red shorts.

And he suddenly enforced the Football Association's little-known law, which states that if undershorts are worn, they must be of the same main colour as the shorts.

Adie, 39, then sent the player and a teammate wearing black cycling undershorts to the sidelines to change in front of more than 200 spectators.

One returned to the field wearing nothing under his shorts at all.

"It was farcical. The players were made to strip in front of the crowd, which is quite an ordeal for lads aged 16 or 17," the Sun quoted Bath chairman Manda Rigby as saying.

"The ref was forced to lock himself in his room for half an hour after the game," she added.
