It was double joy for Campion High School, Colaba at the Azad Maidan yesterday. After they routed Cathedral and John Connon 3-0 in the morning in the under-14 Nike MSSA league inter-school football tournament Division I match, they rose to the challenge of playing the final of the Subroto Mukherjee District Football tournament against Bombay Scottish in the evening.
Since the MSSA schedule was prepared well in advance and the Subroto matches take place every day, not much could be done with the Campion coach, Hanzel Fernandes, trying in vain to postpone either of their games.u00a0
"The school gave the boys a holiday since they had two matches to play. The boys were undoubtedly tired but we had no option. We knew it was a final and didn't want to take any chance. The boys were ready to play, so we played," coach Fernandes said.
Although Bombay Scottish dominated the game they failed to find the mark. The Campion boys did exceptionally well to hold Scottish to a 0-0 draw and force the game into the penalty shoot-out.
Campion custodian Siddhartha Shekhar rose to the occasion as he produced some fine saves. He not only stood firm under the bar during the game, but also pulled off a couple of outstanding saves during the penalty shoot-out to give his team 5-3 victory in the tie-break.
