Mumbai again failed to clear the quarter-final hurdle as they lost to Maharashtra by seven wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy at New Delhi yesterday. The Aditya Tare-led Mumbai side also stumbled in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final stage when Karnataka beat them by an innings and 20 runs in Nagpur. However, yesterday's defeat against Maharashtra hurt the Mumbai skipper more. "There has always been a fierce rivalry between Mumbai and Maharashtra. A defeat to Maharashtra is very tough to digest," Tare told mid-day over the phone from Delhi yesterday.
'Young team'
"It's a young team - five players made their debuts in the tournament. For the last two years, we did not qualify for the knockout stage and even with a young team, we managed to get to the knockouts," Tare said. Though Mumbai elected to bat, they failed to put a good score on the board. It was a good show by Maharashtra as they first restricted Mumbai to a modest 222 for 9 in 50 overs and then surpassed the score in 46.5 overs, losing only three wickets.
Two of Mumbai's top batsmen Suryakumar Yadav (69 in 88 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (35) - conjured up a 47-run stand for the fourth wicket. "Cricket is a funny game. Siddhesh scored three hundreds in eight games and unfortunately for us, he couldn't fire today. He is a player who gets big runs once he is set, but he got out inside 10 balls. We can't really blame him, but as captain I should have stuck around and played better and longer. We could have done better in the bowling and batting departments. We were a bit slack in the field as well," said Tare.
Mundhe shines for Maha
Maharashtra sent pacer Shrikant Mundhe to open the innings and he grabbed the opportunity by scoring 70 in 95 balls with the help of nine fours and one six.
