Pakistan’s general election on Feb 08 was marred by militant attacks, suspension of mobile phones and killing of several people. Imran Khan’s PTI and Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N are in neck-to-neck competition as Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif both declared victory in the elections. Amid the delay of election results, as per the Pakistan Election Commission independents backed by former PM Imran Khan won the most seats. Independent candidates of Imran Khan had won 100 seats, with Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) taking 72 seats. The polls were held for 265 Pakistan National Assembly seats, a party need 133 seats for a simple majority. Analysts predicted there may be no clear winner, adding problems to country’s economic crisis amid the polarised political environment. As per Dawn, PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are proceeding to form a coalition govt in the Centre, Punjab, and Balochistan. Meanwhile, as per Reuters, candidates backed by the party of jailed Imran Khan plan to form a govt, an aide to the former PM said on Feb 10.
