The 36 year old veteran made several crucial saves, including key stops during the penalty shootout, helping India secure a thrilling win in the quarterfinals. With 328 international caps and appearances at three Olympic Games, Sreejesh is competing in his fourth and final Olympics in Paris, having announced his retirement after these Games. Born on May 8, 1986, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Sreejesh comes from a farming family and initially trained in sprinting, volleyball, and long jump before switching to hockey on his coach’s advice. He made his junior international debut in 2004 against Australia and his senior debut at the 2006 South Asian Games. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey praised Sreejesh’s performance, calling him the “god of Indian Hockey.” Sreejesh’s wife Aneeshya also praised his game and expressed hope for a gold medal this time.

The Indian men's hockey team dethroned 2018 gold medallist Japan in the men's hockey event on Friday and qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 by claiming their fourth gold medal in the Asian Games. The Indian team continued to do wonders since the arrival of head coach Craig Fulton as they remained unbeaten throughout the event and defeated Japan by 5-1 in the 19th Asian Games. Both teams kicked off the final on equal preceedings as Japan and India looked to breach each other's defence and break the stalemate. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh looking to showcase his prowess in the penalty corner failed to get past the keeper in the 15th minute.The first quarter ended goalless. He said, “Indian Hockey has created its dominance in Asian Games by winning a medal...It is a huge victory for Indian Hockey...It is a proud moment for all of us...I want to congratulate the team on this win.”
