Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comment on Barack Obama’s statement on minority rights in India stirred a controversy. In a tweet, he said there are many "Hussain Obamas" in the country and the state police will act according to its priorities. The Opposition was quick to hit back at the Assam chief minister. Sarma’s tweet was in response to a journalist’s tweet who posed a question asking if any FIR has been lodged against Obama for hurting religious sentiments. Congress spokesperson and social media head Supriya Shrinate was quick to attack Sarma on his tweet. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also reacted to Sarma's tweet. In an interview with CNN, Barack Obama said that India must protect its minorities, or it would ‘pull apart’. “If I had a conversation with PM Modi who I know well, part of my argument would be that if you do not protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, then there is a strong possibility that India at some point starts pulling apart. We have seen what happens when you start getting those kind of large internal conflicts,” Former US President Barack Obama had said in an interview with CNN. To his comments, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman retaliated and gave a scathing reply.
