A British soldier has died of a gunshot wound in Iraq. The Defence Ministry said the soldier died on Thursday at a base in Basra. It said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

A British soldier has died of a gunshot wound in Iraq. The Defence Ministry said the soldier died on Thursday at a base in Basra. It said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

The soldier is from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. Two soldiers died at the same base in December from gunshot wounds.

A total of 179 British service personnel have now died in Iraq since the US led invasion in March 2003.
