Sydney: A Saudi Arabian prisoner, believed to be the bodyguard for Osama Bin Laden, has been sent home from Gauntanamo Bay after more than a decade behind bars, said the Pentagon.

According to ABC News, Abdul Shalabi was arrested in December 2001 by Pakistani forces and was transferred to Guantanamo the following month.

The US defence department has said that the 39-year-old was a member of al Qaeda and a longtime bodyguard of Bin Laden.

The US defence department also said that he received specialised combat training for his role as a suicide operative in an aborted component of 9/11 attacks on the US.
