The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s arrogance is not difficult to spot. On one hand, the elected president N Srinivasan tells a national news agency that the South Africa tour is definitely on. On the other, members of his own Board inform media persons that the tour was not discussed at all at Sunday’s working committee meeting in Kolkata.
Is this the kind of respect a major series between two heavyweight teams deserves? Interim president Jagmohan Dalmiya or Srinivasan ought to have come out with a full statement on the tour and clear the air as to why a two-Test series was hastily scheduled against West Indies when the focus should have been on the South Africa tour.
A little over 20 years ago, it was the Indian board which hosted South Africa when the International Cricket Council decided on their readmission after a 21-year exile caused by apartheid. After the 1991 one-day series, India was the first nation to play South Africa in a full Test series.
What happened to that good relationship fostered by Dalmiya and Ali Bacher? Apparently, it turned sour when Haroon Lorgat was chief executive of the International Cricket Council where Srinivasan and he did not see eye to eye. Dalmiya told reporters in Kolkata yesterday that Lorgat should apologise to the BCCI. Is this what is expected from the acting chief of the most important cricket body in the world? Or should he be talking about where exactly the series stands and let apologies be handed out behind closed doors.
While the BCCI continues to be non-elaborative to the media on the series, it will not be wrong to assume that the cricketing battle is stalled because of human differences. Why should cricket lovers be deprived? Also, why should our cricket team which needs to improve on their overseas credibility be denied a chance of doing just that? Cricket is known to be a strange game with a whole lot of twists and turns, but our administrators are proving to be stranger.
