The revelation that the 33-year old television comedian, who got himself "crucified" during rituals on Good Friday (KHALIDOSCOPE, April 12) in a Philippines village outside Manila, has outraged the country's majority Catholic population.

They are angry that the Melbourne comedian, using an assumed name, exploited the dramatic enactment of the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ in an "immoral and disrespectful manner" for the stunt for an Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV series to be screened this year.

Safran, who reportedly cried out in agony as his palms and feet were nailed to a cross after being brought in a procession, had suffered some bleeding in his hands and feet, but was said to be "OK".

Safran and his TV crew have been threatened with deportation and forced to sign an affidavit undertaking not to use footage of the offensive ritual.
