The Strategen Dr H D Kanga Cricket League witnessed its first A Division centurion for the ongoing season yesterday. Harshad Bhojnaik of Young Maharashtra achieved the feat with a brilliant 117 against Shivaji Park Gymkhana in the 'A' Division match played at Shivaji Park.
"I always dreamt of scoring a century in the Kanga league. Like every other cricketer, I wished to see my name in the Kanga League book. It feels great that I will have my name alongside such big personalities," Bhojnaik said after scoring his maiden Kanga century.
Bhojnaik, who hails from a middle-class family, found it difficult to afford cricketing gear. But thanks to Surekha Bandhera (women's wing secretary at the MCA) under whom Harshad has been training since he was five, he could pursue his cricketing passion as she gave him all the financial assistance. "I would like to dedicate this century to my father and Surekha, who have been extremely supportive," said Bhojnaik.
The 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman feels that it might be late to be selected for the Mumbai Ranji Trophy side, since most of the promising wicketkeepers are either 19 or 20. But this hundred could change things.
Harshad said: "This century has come in just our second match. If I continue to prove myself and keep playing the way I did today, there is a good chance for me to be selected. I will spare no effort to realise my dream of playing for Mumbai."
Young Maharashtra scored 207 for seven to which SPG replied with 88 for five in a drawn game.
