The freak accident yesterday when two trains collided could perhaps have been averted if the Railways had taken strict action against erring motormen.

"The Western Railway administration let off a motorman without stringent action last year after he jumped a signal.

The administration overlooks such errors due to pressure from the motormen's lobby," said a railway official, on condition of anonymity.

But Western Railway CPRO S S Gupta disagreed. "We aren't lenient with anyone and have never compromised on safety.

We have taken strict action whenever we've noticed any negligence." An Andheri-bound slow local rammed into a Borivli-bound stationary train at Mahim at 1.10 pm yesterday.

The train for Borivli could not depart because of the non-functional signal whereas SP Kolhe, motorman of the Andheri-bound local, appeared to have missed a signal before Mahim.

Kolhe insists that the signal was green, but the railway administration has dismissed his claims.u00a0 Sources said the Auxiliary Warning System was switched off and hence, failed to stop the train.

"We will know the facts after an enquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety," said Gupta.
