Father gets victim's dismembered body on day of funeral

Amar Singh Rathore had been stretching himself to make his daughter's marital life blissful. But he failed to

realise that he was only making the greed of her in-laws insatiable.

The incident dates back to August 14 in the Wazirpur area of northwest Delhi. Anjana, 22, was married to Navneet, 25, on April 17, 2009, but soon after Anjana's in-laws started torturing her for dowry.

"Navneet's family often demanded expensive gifts or cash on festivals and other occasions. We used to pay them at least Rs 50,000 or some costly gift. We always fulfilled their demands as we did not want her to suffer," Rathore told MiD DAY.

After a year of marriage, Navneet's family demanded Rs 2.5 lakh from Rathore. "At that time I was on the way to Jammu, so I told them to wait till my return. I also made several calls infroming them that though I would try my best, I couldn't promise to pay such a huge amount. They threatened me with dire consequences. Then I immeditely returned and tried to collectu00a0 the money. But even before I could have the amount ready they killed my daughter," said a grieving Rathore.

He was informed about his daughter's death by one of Navneet's neighbours on August 14.
"We received a phone call from a neighbour. He told us that my daughter had been killed and her body is lying in a hospital. We saw a red mark around her neck. But we were shocked beyond belief when we took the body for funeral after post-mortem. We noticed that both her big toes had been chopped off," Rathore said.

The police have lodged an FIR under sections 498 A and 304 B of IPC against Puran Singh (father-in-law of the deceased), Premwati (mother-in-law), Navneet (husband) and Meenakhsi (sister-in-law of the deceased).
"The marriage has not crossed the limit of seven years so the SDM of the area will inquire into the matter," said a police officer.

Anjana's body was found in the washroom of Navneet's house and the cops found a suicide note of three pages near the corpse. But the father of the deceased alleged that the letter is forged. "I saw the suicide note. Nobody who commits suicide writes such an elaborate letter," Rathore claimed. All efforts to reach Navneet's family went in vain.
