18 years after the original plan was made, the statue was finally unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

While the venue had some 3,000 police personnel for protection, the police had also rounded up around 1,000 activists belonging to pro-Kannada organisations as a precautionary measure.

You can check out Wikipedia's page on Tiruvalluvar for more information on this saint.

You can also check out the Thirukkural, which contains 133 chapters of 10 couplets each.

Of course, the most famous statue of Tiruvalluvar, which is over 40 metres tall, is located in Kanyakumari.
