Aparna Shekar, a 19-year-old, who formed the NGO Pause for Paws six months ago, said, "I wanted to do something for stray dogs. Though we had no resources or backing, we pitched in and planned Run for a Cause."
"We've all worked really hard. As of now, we are four members but people call to join in every day," Keertana R V, a first-year BBM student said.
Krithika Gupta, a member, feels culling the dogs is not the solution.
"The stray dog menace is rampant because the dogs are not properly fed. We plan to raise money through a marathon to feed the dogs,' she said.u00a0
Why a marathon?
"Marathons are really catching up nowadays. The distance to cover will be 5 km and the winner will walk away with a prize. Through the marathon, we will know how many people are 'alert' enough to do something for a cause," Keertana said.
Pause for Paws faced criticism at first.
"People used to say that when big and well-known NGOs couldn't do much, what could a bunch of teenagers do? This was very de-motivating, but if we need to make a change we need to start young. As responsible citizens, we are more than happy to be doing something for the society," Aparna said.
Raja Karthik, another member, said, "We are a small group of animal lovers who help lost pets. When we find a homeless dog or cat, we take it to the vet and board it. We also help vaccinate stray dogs. The eventual goal is to find a home for the dogs. We have helped around 50 animals so far."
The marathon will be held on January 25 between 8 am and 10 am.
