Swine flu ko dho dala?

That's what a city drycleaner is claiming he can achieve with a special anti-microbial treatment for clothes. Doctors say it's eyewash. But as the flu claimed its first two victims in the city yesterday, even this wash is attracting attention

Amid the clatter of all the desi anti-swine flu treatments, here comes the most imaginative one. A city-based drycleaner is offering an innovative chemical treatment for clothes that he claims can prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus causing the flu.

Dr A Srivastava, executive director of the dry-cleaning firm, claims a new anti-microbial treatment, which he is offering at no extra cost, kills bacteria and viruses in clothes.

"We come in contact with multiple viruses at home, at the work place and while travelling. Our anti-microbial treatment ensures all germs and viruses are eradicated while the clothes are being dry-cleaned. And this treatment doesn't harm the garments," said Dr Srivastava.

In the dry-cleaning plant, the employees are reportedly scanned for infections before coming in contact with garments. "The technology we use and the process is of international standard. Our employees are regularly checked for swine flu infection and we make sure our plant is free of H1N1 virus," he added.

Docs not convinced

Meanwhile, doctors aren't buyingu00a0 this wash theory. "Washing your hands with an anti-bacterial soap can slow the spread of the virus. But keeping clothes germ-free is of no use. Also, once a garment has been dry-cleaned and a person infected with flu sneezes nearby, the virus will attach itself to the clothing. There are powerful germicidals that can kill germs but they are not effective against the H1N1 virus. This is nothing but a publicity stunt. Washing of clothes has got nothing to do with the spread of the swine flu," said Dr KK Agarwal, a general physician.

Customers interested

However, panic-stricken customers don't mind shelling out a little extra to stay safe. And the dry-cleaner is being flooded with enquiries. "If dry-cleaning clothes can keep the swine flu away from my family I don't mind paying extra for the service," said Pramod Kumar, a businessman from East of Kailash.

Suman Grover, a housewife from Mayur Vihar, also seemed interested. "I am doing everything to keep my family safe from the swine flu. So if dry-cleaning clothes can help, I will try it out too. Anyway theu00a0 dry-cleaning company is not charging anything extra for the service," said Grover.
