"Our doctors will take an oath to do 13 surya-namaskars (sun salutations) everyday for the next one year. We want to establish how an age-old Indian practice can keep life-threatening illnesses at bay. Rather than simply aping the West, we want to take the knowledge of our forefathers to a global level.

The only way to do that is to prove the benefits of the surya-namaskar by experimenting it on ourselves and making the results clear for all to see," said Dr Dilip Sarda, president of Indian Medical Association, Pune.

Before enrolling in the project, doctors underwent various medical tests at the Ruby Hall Clinic such as blood sugar levels, body mass index, body fat analysis, blood pressure and lipid profile.
Three hundred and sixty-five days from this Sunday, the affects of the surya-namaskar on the doctors' bodies are to be gauged through various tests.

"It is a cross sectional study that involves doctors between 30 to 80 years, including 100 female medicos," added Dr Sarda. Dr Avinash Bhondwe, a senior member of the IMA said the doctors' condition is to be monitored on a daily basis. "We will ask doctors to give us daily reports through SMSes, and will also conduct monthly meetings in public places, so we can practice together. At the end of the year, we will measure the progress of the participants by comparing results of new tests with the old," said Bhondwe.
