Thugs rob jailed MP's house and make away with two cellphones and an expensive watch

It takes guts to rob the house of one of India's most notorious criminal-politicians, Mohammad Shahabuddin. But the unidentified miscreants, who robbed the jailed Member of Parliament's house early on Tuesday morning, may not have been aware of the criminal clout of their victim.

The unidentified assailants, allegedly drug addicts, scaled the walls of the Rashtriya Janata Dal MP's house at 5, BD Marg, Parliament Street, and fled with two mobile phones and an expensive watch.

Ajay Kumar, a relative of the MP who was present in the house at the time of the incident, filed the police complaint. "We received a call from Ajay saying that valuables from the house had been stolen. He told us that some men, who seemed to be drug addicts, scaled the wall and locked the security guard outside the house before fleeing away with the valuables," said a police official at the Parliament street police station .

The police have registered a case of theft. "After gathering evidence from the spot we have detained a few people. Drug addicts who loiter near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib have been targeting houses of VIPs in the area. They are aware that these houses are mostly vacant as the leaders are often away from Delhi. So they strike at will. We suspect that this too was their handiwork," said the cop.

Shahabuddin, an MP from Siwan in Bihar, is currently serving life imprisonment for kidnapping with intent to murder and is facing trial in more than 30 criminal cases, including eight murders, 20 attempted murders as well as kidnapping and extortion. On Wednesday, the Patna High Court rejected the bail petition of Shahabuddin in a case pertaining to seizure of illegal weapons and foreign currencies from his Pratapur ancestral house in Siwan.
