Raj Kumar Chauhan and wife admitted to hospital; close aides say minister is fine

All those who have met Delhiu00a0 Public Works Departmentu00a0 (PWD) Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan during last week must have been queuing up to get themselves checked for swine flu after the news spread that he contracted the viral disease.

However, close aides to the minister already taking medicines for the flu are rejecting the news as "rumours" and claimed that Chauhan was doing fine.

However, sources said that Chauhan and his wife Kamal both are admitted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, adding that a "worried" chief minister Sheila Dikshit called up twice on Sunday to ask his well being.

They confirmed that Chauhan talked to Dikshit for some time but is not taking any other calls.

u00a0"When Chauhan was admitted on Saturday night he was serious as his sugar level was recorded as 475 mg/dl.

He was taken to the ICU but later as his condition stabilised he was shifted to swine flu emergency ward. He is under the medical supervision of Dr AK Bhalla," a close aid to the minister said, requesting anonymity.u00a0

Shakeel Saifi, another close associate of Chauhan, confirmed that the minister was under medical care and his staff has also been administered medicines. "I was with him when he (Chauhan) was being taken to the hospital," Saifi said.

Sources said some people who met Chauhan recently are also taking swine flu tests.

According to hospital sources, Chauhan is unlikely to be released on Monday, and therefore, will not be able to attend the Cabinet meeting schedule for Monday.

Interestingly, Chauhan is the second minister in the Sheila Cabinet whose family has been affected by swine flu.
Earlier, a few months back both sons of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf reportedly tested positive for swine flu.
