Toilets, kiosks near Games venues will be constructed only after streetscaping
With all the hullabaloo going on over unfinished streetscaping work, the installation of street furnitures like toilets, kiosks, information boards, iron chairs and benches, has taken a backseat.
With major construction work going on, the setting up of facilitation counters and conveniences in different parts of the city could not be started. So the government later asked the concerned agencies to complete the beautification work at least around the Games venues and the roads leading to the sites.
The city government had given contract to four firms to install the furnitures on a BOT (build, operate, transfer) basis for next 15 years. However, the companies are yet to start the work as the streetscaping projects around most of the venuesu00a0 are still incomplete.
"We have asked the firms to install toilets first and then the kiosks, if time permits," said a senior Delhi government official. Information related to the Games, medical facilities as well as all the city will be made available in the kiosks.
Apology note
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday apologised to the Delhiites for the 'inconvenience' caused due to the Games work. "For the last three to four months, Delhiites have been suffering due to the construction works going on in the city. I apologise to the residents for this. But if we have to achieve something, then we all should be ready to make sacrifices," she said at the Independence Day celebrations.
