Radhika Ahuja has been living in Mumbai for five years. The theatre director from Dramanon, the only theatre company in the quaint university town of Manipal, can't contain her enthusiasm. She is rehearsing seven white-collar professionals for the first play in the Mumbai chapter of her troupe -- William Seebring's The Original Last Wish baby.

"OLWB is a blend of black humour, pathos and unexpected moments of comedy. Throughout the play, there is a strong vein of criticism of popular culture and sensationalism," she says. The play's radical element lies in its brilliant roller coaster scripting and the use of the audio-visual medium in such a way that theatre borders on the cinematic. "The play is unique in that just seven actors play over 40 different roles," says the director of The Comic Potential and Diaries of James Hacker, Dramanon's take on Yes Minister.
Dramatist Anonymous was born in 1991 to integrate the diverse student body of Manipal's university town in a common creative goal. Dramanon was Manipal's first ever unofficial, cross university, age no bar endeavour.
Over those endless cups of coffee, pub crawls, tears and laughter, Dramanon grew organically into its founding vision -- a self-sustaining, self-regulated unofficial creative body. Along the way with play readings, scriptwriting workshops and acting workshops, followed several productions. Audition lines grew from three to 300, rehearsal spaces expanded.u00a0 Dramanon Manipal, 25 productions and several shows old, runs to packed houses. Students and lecturers come and go, but Dramanon Manipal lives on. The Bangalore chapter started in 2006, over coffee and incurable optimism.
Made up of a few student alumni from Dramanon Manipal, the Bangalore chapter is a mix of daytime professionals who morph into actors, set designers, production managers and directors.
After the birth of the third chapter in Hyderabad in 2007, Dramanon is now starting its Mumbai chapter with OLWB.
