Two women were injured in two separate fire accidents between 10 pm and 10.30 pm, last night. While one of the victims was saved from any serious injury by her quick thinking neighbours, the other was not so lucky, and suffered 60 per cent burns.
The first incident occurred at Vadgaon Sheri's Samarth Nagar Society on the fifth floor flat of Subhash Wandhare. At approximately 10 pm, his wife was in the kitchen trying to change an empty gas cylinder, when gas leaked out. Within few seconds, the kitchen was set ablaze.
"We immediately disconnected the electricity in the building and rushed to the apartment with dry powder to douse the flames," said Hemant Karnawat, a contractor of the building, who was present at the spot. Karnawat added that the woman in the house suffered 10-15 per cent burns and was rushed to the nearby Niramaya hospital.
In the second incident, a 24-year-old woman suffered sixty per cent burns while trying to light a stove at her residence in Tukar Nagar at Vadgaon Dhayari.
According to the police complaint filed at Haveli police station, the victim was identified as Savita Govindkar.
The incident happened at around 10.30 pm while she was trying to light her stove. "The stove caught fire and soon her clothes caught fire as well. Her husband was sitting outside the house with her two kids and came running inside after hearing her screams," said a police officer.
However, despite several attempts by her husband Babu, who burnt both his hands trying to rescue her, she suffered serious burns. She was admitted to Sassoon hospital with 60 per scent burns, and is said to be in a serious condition.u00a0
