The escape of a convict from Yerawada Central jail has exposed the negligent attitude of officials in the prison.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Office (Western Region Prisons) was kept in the dark about a hole that had been created in the wall of Barrack No. 3. It was allegedly made to help water drain out of the compound.
As per the jail manual, it is necessary to inform the DIG Office before carrying out repair, changes or modifications inside the jail. No such prior permission was taken before creating a hole in the wall.
DIG speaks
DIG S N Chavan said, "Officers at superintendent level are entitled to take such decisions and there is no need to inform us in advance."
Balasaheb Gajabhau Pawar (40), a lifer from Ahmednagar, cut the bar fitted to Barrack No 3, and managed to slip through a hole in the wall outside the barrack.
When asked about the negligence on the part of supervisor at the ironsmith workshop who did not frisk Pawar, Chavan said, "We are inquiring into the matter and no one will be spared.
DIG Chavan refused to divulge details regarding when the barrack was last checked by authorities and said they would be revealed only after an inquiry report was filed. But an officer on condition of anonymity said that it was negligence on the part of all officers for not informing the DIG Office before making any changes in the structure that compromised security in the jail.
