Three men wearing helmets loot bank in east Delhi; escape with Rs 7 lakh
The incident took place in the New Kondli area of Mayur Vihar Phase I, when five men armed with countrymade pistols barged into the Development Credit Bank around 3.30 pm. While three of them looted the bank wearing helmets to hide their identity, two in regular clothes, posed as customers.
Hostage drama
Before entering the bank, the assailants snatched the rifle of the security guard and held him hostage at gunpoint. They then entered the bank and locked the employees in a room, after which they collected the cash from the teller and fled.
At the time of the incident there were eight people in the bank, including a customer.
Cops blame bank
Meanwhile, cops said despite guidelines and directives issued by them, the bank did not have a security camera, which could have helped identify the robbers. "The bank is located at an isolated spot and the robbers were aware there would not be much activity in the afternoon. They had come prepared and the robbery was over in few minutes. There was no security camera so there is no recording of the incident. We are investigating all angles," said a police official involved in the investigation.
The Delhi police also said they were coordinating with their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh as the bank is located near the Delhi-UPu00a0border. "It does not look like the handiwork of a professional gang. Criminals from neighbouring villages could be involved," said the senior cop, wishing anonymity.
