Criminals, beware! As the process of modernising city's control room is near completion, the time taken by cops to reach a crime scene will be drastically cut down.
Said Pune's commissioner of police Dr Satyapal Singh, "Global Information System (GIS) will be installed to enable the police operator on duty to pinpoint the location of the distressed caller."
He added that 160 patrolling mobile vans and bikes would be fitted with the Global Positioning System (GPS), which will enable the operator to locate the vehicle nearest to the caller and send it across immediately.
Said Dr Singh, "Earlier, the operator at the control room would inform the nearest police station about the distressed caller. The station would then inform the patrolling vehicles attached to it and hence, it was a bit time consuming. But now, the operator will be able to trace the patrolling vehicle nearest to the caller by just looking at his screen."
Additional Commissioner Sanjiv Kumar Singhal, who is overseeing the project, told MiD-DAY, "As every call will be recorded at the control room, the complaints about the late arrival of police at the spot can be scrutinised immediately." He added that if they notice that calls are more frequent from a particular area, then theyu00a0 can place their resources accordingly.
Singhal said, "We have made a map of the city at the scale of 1:2500. This will allow us to take a look at important establishments and geographical demarcations. The map is divided into 60 layers and each layer will display a different group of establishments, such as educational institutions, hospitals, police establishments and so on. This will save us time."
Dr Singh confirmed that the process would be in place by August 23.
