Following Sunday's massive fire, MiD DAY did an analysis, and found that such incidents are waiting to happen
After the inferno that raged through Carlton Towers in February, authorities had found that the building was violating several norms including BBMP by-laws, endangering the lives of people who had offices there.

Fire Chief (West) N U Erappa said, "The Carlton Tower incident is the worst example we were stuck in traffic for about 90 minutes because the traffic was moving from all directions.
Sunday's fire at Shivajinagar is another example the residents getting in the way was a major hindrance."
Narrow escape
As if on cue, a major tragedy was averted yesterday morning after leakage of Ammonium Nitrate was detected at the Karnataka Milk Federation's cold storage plant.
The leakage occurred at 10.30 am, when a pipe transporting the dangerous chemical to the entire complex accidentally broke during the annual maintenance.
It took 20 minutes for two fire trucks and one rescue van to reach the plant. The Bannerghatta fire station is situated less than two kilometres away from the plant.
Erappa added, "We often get delayed in reaching hot spots on time because of the traffic.
People just don't have a traffic sense; the auto drivers are the worse. The building security guards also take their own time to open the gates.
And these are only some of the hindrances that makes it difficult for us to carry out our work."
Let's take a look at some of the fire incidents that took place in the city earlier this year:
Sheer Negligence
> Once NOCs are issued to builders; maintenance is no longer an issue for them. To avoid spending more money, builders over look fire safety
> Rampant misinterpretation of laws to suit individuals
> Lack of education on safety measures
> Lack of fire fighting equipment in homes and offices to fight a potential fire
> Improper housekeeping, perishable items stored carelessly, which may lead to a major fire
> Even the educated are are unaware of the fire departments' number, so precious time is wasted, with them trying to contact the right department
> Smoke detectors have a life of only 3-4 years and are hardly serviced
> No check on building by-laws followed
