Just days after Commissioner of Police Meeran Chadha Borwankar appealed to people to register complaints for each and every crime, including petty crimes, an eve-teasing incident in Pimpri late last night showed people still seem to believe in their own ability to deliver justice rather than approaching the enforcers of the law.Hemant Band, a Chinchwad resident in his twenties, was thrashed by a furious mob after a 19-year-old woman accused him of eve-teasing in Pimpri Waghire. While nobody bothered to take the matter to the police, the young man was kicked and punched around and beaten with a belt, and some people threatened to kill him.After some time, the crowd took Hemant to an undisclosed location.u00a0He touched me'Rajni (name changed to protect identity), the victim of eve-teasing, said she was walking down the road near City Financial office around 10.30 pm when Hemant tried to touch her. She alleged Hemant had been followed her for a while. As a panicked Rajni raised an alarm, shouting for help, social activist Meenu Gil, who was passing by, pacified the girl and called some local residents to help. Soon a large crowd gathered at the spot, caught hold of Hemant and started thrashing him.Rajni said, I don't know who Hemant is, but he has been harassing me for the past 15 days. He used to follow me on his bike and has occasionally touched me. Hemant even dared to follow me when my brother was accompanying me. I was terrified by these incidents and finally told my brother about it.Gil said, These incidences are on the rise in Pimpri Waghire area as there is no significant police presence or patrolling. Also, poor street-lighting has added to problems which women face while commuting.Asked about these incidents, police officials said, We will take action against eve-teasers if people report the matter to us. People should come forward and file complaints instead of resorting to mob justice.
