BRIC to consider global security

Brazilian Minister of Strategic Affairs Roberto Mangabeira Unger will meet with his partners from the BRIC countries in Moscow to discuss issues related to the world financial system, global security and non-proliferation.

The meeting scheduled for May 29-30 will formulate the agenda for the summit of leaders of Brazil, India, Russia and China due in Yekaterinburg in June. "It is important to streamline such structures as G20 and G8 that meets with leaders of China, India, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa -- in the 8 plus 5 format," he said. "At present, the world is discussing wider participation of developing countries in the existing international organisations," Unger said.

The Brazilian minister also stressed on reconsideration of the international trade system that dictates a specific model of market economy. "The BRIC countries -- both at government level and societal level -- realise that such policy is erroneous" and that "the world trade should be characterised by the maximum economic transparency and minimal institutional pressure."

The future role of the US dollar as a reserve currency, "which raises discontent among BRIC countries" should be another topic on the agenda, he said.
