India's first ever national defence university will become a reality by 2012, Minister of State for Defence Production Rao Inderjit Singh told MiD DAY.
Apart from defence and para-military personnel, civilians would also be able to learn war tricks at the university.
The Minister said 200 acres of land would be acquired by the end of March in Haryana for setting up the Indian National Defence University (INDU). "We will soon release Rs 100 crore to the Haryana government for the purpose," Singh said.
The University, only third of its kind in the world, would be an umbrella institution to train and impart expertise to defence, para-military personnel and civilians. The existing training institutions like National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy would be affiliated to the university.
After the Kargil war the Prime Minister's Office had okayed land acquisition, one of the main hurdles in the inception of the university, on NH8 near Gurgaon.
Only the United States and China have such institutions.

He said initially there would be short-term courses of ten months duration and later on other courses will be introduced.
Discussing the structure of the organization, he said the vice-chancellor of the university will be a three-star official from any one of the defence forces and the post of vice-president will be served by a retired secretary level official from civils. There will be a board consisting of 15 members, five each from serving defence, civil and retired defence officials.
The minister, who is also an MP from Mahendergarh (Haryana), said: "It is really a proud moment for Haryana. It will generate plenty of employment opportunities for the people."
