For the second consecutive day on Tuesday, Mumbai saw a drop in daily COVID-19 cases while the state also witnessed a decline in the numbers. While this might be a sign of respite, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) struggles to increase the pace of the vaccination drive due to glitches in the CoWin app, a reason that they have cited for not being able to give the second dose to healthcare workers despite them arriving at the respective centres.

AMID rising concerns over the sudden spike in daily COVID-19 cases over the past couple of days, the city saw some relief for the second consecutive day with a dip in the number of infections. With the state government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) taking strict action against those found violating COVID-19 protocols, the authorities concerned said that they would hopefully be successful in controlling the numbers again.

With the state recording 6,218 fresh cases on Tuesday, the total tally hit 21.12 lakh. The total number of COVID-related deaths too increased to 51,857 with Maharashtra recording 51 fresh fatalities. However, after consistently recording a high number of daily COVID cases over the past one week, the city reported 643 fresh ones on Tuesday. While the civic officials are hopeful that this trend will continue, sources said it could be due to the drop in the number of tests.

Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation area, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation area in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 142, 106 and 107 cases respectively. The state’s recovery rate now stands at 94.96 per cent with 5,869 patients discharged across the state on Tuesday. Mumbai’s recovery rate also stands at 94 per cent while the doubling rate has dropped to 305 days owing to the increase in number of cases.

The city’s overall growth rate too has increased in the last one week and it currently stands at 0.23 per cent. The city’s total count stands at 3.20 lakh cases and 31.64 lakh tests have been carried out so far. The city has 7,536 ongoing cases.

However, the state’s mortality rate has dropped and is 2.45 per cent currently. Till date, there have been 51,857 COVID-related deaths across the state. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,195.

According to the state government’s data, the state has recorded 51 COVID-related deaths. Nagpur leads with nine fatalities. However, 11 deaths were reported in the MMR, which includes eight in Mumbai, two in Navi Mumbai, and one in Raigad. Whereas, according to the civic body’s data, total three deaths were reported in Mumbai. All patients were suffering from other ailments and were senior citizens.
