Technical glitches have once again slowed down the pace of vaccinations in the city. Less than 50 per cent of the healthcare workers, who received the first dose of the vaccine 28 days back, got the second dose over the past eight days. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have cited problems in the Co-Win app to be the reason behind the low vaccination numbers. Meanwhile, the civic body managed to achieve only 88 per cent of Tuesday’s vaccination target.

A total of 23,399 healthcare workers had received the first dose between January 19 and 23, the first nine days of the vaccination drive. While the BMC started to give the second dose on February 15, only 10,385 healthcare workers have received it till Tuesday, February 23. While there are many reasons for the pace being slow, like convenience of date, place, side-effects and anxiety, a technical error in the Co-Win app is at the forefront, said a BMC official.
“We are dealing with the other issues and the increasing response from frontline workers is a positive result of it, but we are not being able to give the second dose to healthcare workers despite them visiting centres, due to technical glitches in the Co-Win portal,” said a civic official.
Meanwhile, the BMC achieved less than 90 per cent of its vaccination target on Tuesday. While all 34 centres have a combined capacity to inoculate 11,600 people, only 10,257 people received the jab. Out of this, 6,494 were frontline workers, 1,197 were healthcare workers who received their first dose and 3,763 were healthcare workers who got the second dose.
Up till now, 1.90 lakh doses have been given. Out of this, 1,79,697 people have received their first dose, including 1.02 lakh healthcare workers and 78,000 frontline workers. Two more private hospitals, Wockhardt and Bhatiya will be starting new vaccination centres from Wednesday.
