The economic crisis, which has taken a huge bite out of upmarket restaurant revenues, has also hit Sir Salman Rushdie's Manhattan restaurant At Vermilion.

Just months after its opening in November last year, principal owner Rohini Dey, has acknowledged that "we have to double volumes on a consistent basis".

At Vermilion's staff and high-profile backers are now battling to keep it open. Rushdie will host a literature soiru00e9e at the restaurant next month to drum up customers.

Rushdie, one of the 15 investors who raised the $4.5m (Rs3.3m) needed to open the restaurant, has not disclosed how much money he sank into it.
