The controversial penguin project seems to have a list of troubles that go a mile long. Now, in a letter to civic chief Ajoy Mehta, Opposition leader and Congress corporator Pravin Chheda has demanded that an FIR be registered against the contractor and a departmental inquiry be launched against the officials of the Building Maintenance department.

'Cheating evident'
Chheda’s letter stated that, “It has come to the light that the contractor, Highway Construction Company, has submitted fake letters and completion certificates from reputed international institutions to become eligible to bid for the work of construction of penguin enclosure at Byculla zoo. These institutions have clearly denied that they have issued those letters.”

Speaking to mid-day, Chheda alleged that with the documents, it is clear that the contractors intended to cheat the civic body and that amounts to criminal conspiracy. “So, BMC should register an FIR against the contractor for cheating and forgery and initiate a departmental inquiry against the officials both from the zoo and building maintenance department who dealt with the project for gross negligence and connivance with the contractor,” said Chheda.

Vocal opponent
Recently, Chheda had also written to the Union environment ministry and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for banning import of new animals to the Byculla zoo. Last week, He filed a complaint with the state Lokayukta against civic officials and the contractor responsible for building the penguin enclosure.
