The railway police had received many complaints on their Facebook account about groups that sing bhajans in trains, troubling co-passengers
Acting after several complaints on their Facebook account, the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday detained 22 people in trains between Vashi and CST for singing bhajans. Several people messaged complaints to the Facebook account of GRP, mumbairailwaypolice, about groups that sing bhajans in local trains.

“This morning three teams of CST GRP sat in the second class compartments of trains from Vashi to CST on the Harbour line and after verifying the complaints, booked 22 people from three trains starting at 8.13 am, 8.36 am and 9.15 am from Vashi,” said Dr Ravindra Singhal, commissioner of police, GRP.
“There were several complaints from people travelling on the Harbour line about bhajani mandals in the second class compartments of local trains. These mandals shout and sing songs and carry musical instruments like tabla and taal with them,” said Shivaji Shinde, senior police inspector of CST Railway Police station.
The detained people were fined R1,200 each and later allowed to leave by the police. “Several bhajani mandals sing at the top of their voices during peak hours, making it difficult for senior citizens, as well as others who wish to read newspapers.
They also hold on to seats for their groups so seats are not available for others,” said Shinde. The GRP plans to carry out a sustained drive against such bhajan mandals.
