Cops have charged all the arrested accused in the J Dey murder case with the stringent provisions of the Act; motive behind the murder still eludes them

The Mumbai Police yesterday invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the eight arrested accused in the murder case of senior MiD DAY journalist J Dey, who was shot dead on June 11 on a street in Powai.

"We have invoked MCOCA against all the accused in the case," said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy.

According to the police, MCOCA provisions can be applied if at least two members of an organised crime gang have at least two chargesheets registered against them.

Earlier, Joint Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy had said, "We will have the stringent MCOCA slapped against the accused once the charges are framed."

Among the eight, the most-known accused and the one who identified Dey to the shooters is Vinod Chembur.

The others are Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya (34) and his associates Abhijeet Shinde (28), Arun Dake (27), Sachin Gaikwad (27), Anil Waghmode (35), Nilesh Shendge (34) and Mangesh Agawane (25).

Police have claimed that the journalist was eliminated at the behest of gangster Chhota Rajan, who paid Rs 5 lakh to the accused.

However, they haven't found out why. They had earlier promised to get to the bottom of the motive behind the murder and let the public know, but nothing concrete has come forward until now.

Cops do have confirmation that Rajan was behind the murder, but the reason eludes them.u00a0
