Two youth, including a 16-year-old, who kidnapped an eight-year-old boy with the intention of sodomising him and demanding ransom from his family, were arrested by the Bangur Nagar police yesterday.

The Crime Branch Unit XI traced the ransom call to Baroda and
arrested Mohammed Shahid Shaikh and his 16-year-old
accomplice for the murder of 8-yr-old Dawood Sheikh
The arrests came too late, however, as the youth had panicked and murdered the boy immediately after kidnapping him.
According to crime branch officers from Unit XI, Dawood Sheikh (8) was last seen playing outside his house in Bhagat Singh Nagar, Goregaon, at 9 pm on August 6.
When Dawood's father, who works as a lightman for Bollywood films, came home and found his son missing, he alerted the Bangur Nagar police after a search for the boy in the locality proved futile
Mohammed Shahid Shaikh (21) a toy vendor, and a 16-year-old boy (name withheld), who stay together at a masjid in the locality, had kidnapped Dawood and taken him to the railway tracks at Goregaon to sodomise him.
"The kid raised an alarm, however, and the accused panicked and thought they'd be arrested.

One of the accused stuffed his cap into the victim's mouth and choked him. They then dumped the boy's body at the spot and returned to their locality," said Raghunath Dalvi, senior police inspector, crime branch (Unit XI).
To avoid suspicion, the duo then joined Dawood's father and his neighbours in looking for Dawood in the locality.
When the father registered a police complaint the next day, however, both Shaikh and his 16-year-old accomplice fled to Baroda, their native place.
Ransom call
To muddy the waters further, the accused made a ransom call to Dawood's father as his kidnappers and demanded Rs 2 lakh from him for returning his son.
Some time after that, they called him from another number to play the role of caring neighbours and asked about Dawood's well-being and whether he had been found.
The police had, meanwhile, begun tracing the calls to Dawood's father's number.

"We asked Dawood's father about the people who had been calling him frequently and he mentioned the accused's names. He said they had been in touch with him regularly even when they were not in the city.

Suspecting foul play, we traced the kidnappers' ransom call and the accused's call from Baroda and found that their locations were the same," said Dalvi.
Investigation revealed that the SIM card used by the kidnappers was registered in the name of the maulana of the masjid where the two boys stayed.
When he was questioned, the maulana told the police that the accused had taken documents from him to purchase SIM cards.
The duo was nabbed from Baroda yesterday and they confessed to have killed Dawood even before making the ransom call. Dawood's body was subsequently recovered.
"Shaikh and the 16-year-old have been arrested and charged with murder and kidnapping.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and we will charge the accused with sodomy as well if the report indicates that it had taken place," said Dalvi.
