A question of identity

Dilip Vengsarkar and Vishal Dadlani actually walked into polling booths without mandatory identity proof and expected to vote

Former India cricket captain Dilip Vengsarkar and musician Vishal Dadlani believed their faces were good enough to exercise their right to vote.

Both went to their respective polling booths without a mandatory identity proof and were turned away by officials.

Very busy

"I did not vote for the first time in my life. Usually, I have never carried an identity card to polling stations, but was always allowed to vote.

The former selector insisted he did not have the time to go back to the polling booth in Worli with an identity proof. "I had to attend an important meeting. But my wife and son did cast their vote," he said.

Identity crisis

Dadlani, who is in the news for his online campaign against the proposed Rs 350 crore-memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji off the Arabian Sea, told MiD DAY, "It's sad that the people at the polling centre did not recognise me and stopped me from voting because I did not have an identity card."

Dadlani finally exercised his constitutional right at 3.30 pm at a Peddar Road constituency after flaunting the necessary document.

The musician said he was also disappointed at the low turnout for the Assembly election. "Change is the need of the hour.

If we don't bring in new faces in the government, the same old faces will continue to rule us manipulatively. People should vote for a candidate and not the party," said Dadlani.
