A tiny spa in Bandra promises to provide respite from rigours of everyday living. We stopped by to check out their Black Mask treatment, which they promised would brighten our skin. Not recommended if you have dry skin, though

As I try to relax on the spa bed with a jet-black mask on my face, I try not to break into nervous laughter. It has little to do with the fact that the photographer has his camera pointed at me when I'm at my unflattering best.

I can feel the mask harden to such a degree that I hope my masseuse, Rozee, peels it off easily. I am at the newly opened spa: Angdai. There is just one spa room and sounds of clients dropping by at the reception filter in. It's easy to relax though, even as the music shifts from soothing to a bizarre Punjabi number, and then back again to a nice, tranquil tune.

Apart from offering regular services like body massages, stone therapies, body wraps and deep tissue massages, Angdai also offers sugar peels (an exfoliating body scrub made of brown sugar, from the West Indies) and the Black Mask that is made by French skincare brand Remy Laure.

After a session of cleansing, scrubbing and toning, Rozee puts on the face pack, that is said to be rich in humic acid, 380 minerals, plant extracts and trace elements meant for brightening, replenishing the skin, reducing hypersensitivity and improving skin texture.

It takes 15 minutes for the mask to harden, and it's then peeled off with oodles of cleansing milk. Rozee prompts me to look into the mirror, and my skin does seem clearer and softer. She finishes it up with a quick, relaxing massage on my neck and shoulders, and I'm good to go.

Was the 'transformation' visible? Not quite. In fact, given the texture of my skin, I had patches of dry skin that had to be urgently soothed with some cream. I hope though that the natural pigments were working their magic from the inside. If you're looking for an express service treatment, then consider stopping by, but if you're hoping to unwind over a leisurely weekend, we'd suggest stopping by a place that is further away from the madding crowd.

At: Angdai Day Spa, Le Sutra, 14, Union Park, Khar (W).
Call 26492995.
Cost: Rs 5,000 (whole body).
