Web'11, a short film festival, is all set to enthrall you with movies on the environment this Sunday

Most of you will consider June 5 to be just another day. But if you are someone concerned about the environment, then you must know the prominence of the day. It's the World Environment Day. Now if you are in a mood to celebrate the day, here are a few things that you can do. You can go plant some new saplings in your garden, or you can go and water some trees on the roadside. Or you can even buy some birds and free them. Not up to your scene? Then here is something that we have for you, you can celebrate the day with a short films festival, WEB'11, organised by Filmbooth.

Get shorty
"We feel that short films are an effective medium to reach out to a wider section of the society as they deliver the message in a precise and crisp manner. Seriously nobody would like to spend a whole day watching movies on environment, doesn't matter how devoted towards the betterment of
environment you are. So it's a one day film festival that we are organising on Sunday," says Nagendra Singh, co-founder, Filmbooth.

Au00a0plastic world
How about watching a film that deals with the solution to the menace brought about by plastic cups? That is the story of This Mug for Hire. The film talks about the most common problem that the world is facing today. It deals with a man's search for the solution to the menace created by plastic cups. It's scripted and designed in such a way that the message of the film is very easy to decipher. This film was also the winner at the International Trailer Trash festival last year.

Shark attack
Or watch the film that brought about major legislative changes to protect sharks worldwide. Directed by Mike Pandey, Shores of Silence: Whale Sharks in India has won 11 international awards including The Wildscreen Panda, also known as the Green Oscar. "The screenings will be followed by 10 minute talks by eminent personalities who are associated with the environment," adds Singh.

Around 10 short films will be screened as part of the festival. There is First Period: A film on green schools. Targeted at students and teachers, this is a playful film that looks at education beyond the confines of a classroom. Children engage with the environment and have fun doing activities like composting, planting trees, recycling paper, learning about sustainable agriculture and water harvesting. It's all about stepping out, getting dirty, having fun and learning from the environment.

There's one for school kids too. Do You, a one minute film, narrates the story of school kids saving money and using it for planting trees. It gives out very simple message 'save trees, plant trees'. It won the best short film award at Ecofest 2009. Then there's The Miracle Water Village. The film focuses lauds the efforts of the villagers of Hilware Bazar for recharging their village's groundwater reserves. The village received the National Water Award and is also being studied by the World Water Forum. The film explores the techniques employed explaining how these methods can be replicated by other regions facing water shortages. A dynamic and productive, yet a nice way to spend an evening, isn't it?
