Known for her deep voice, British artist Amy Winehouse won hearts all over the world with her talent, iconic beehive hairdo and alternative lifestyle. Her songs proved a respite from the 'pop' sounds of a music scene dominated by music reality show winners. She won five Grammies for her debut album. Her struggle with alcohol and crack cocaine were well documented. Her cause of death, though,u00a0 has not yet been verified.
Janis Joplin (January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970)
The American singer-songwriter found initial fame as the lead singer of the band, Big Brother and the Holding Company before going solo. Joplin's songs found popularity during the initial years of the hippie craze. Known for her powerful vocals, Joplin was given various epithets, including The Queen of Psychedelic Soul, and has been described as one of the most powerful singers by Time magazine. Joplin's career included performed with Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. Cause of death: Heroin overdose.u00a0

A close friend of Brian Jones, the founding member of The Rolling Stones, who also died at the age of 27, American guitarist and songwriter Jimi Hendrix is considered the greatest Rock Guitarist of all time. A pop cultural icon, Hendrix' face has been painted on everything from T-shirts to bed sheets. He is also closely associated with the famous Woodstock music festival. A Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee, his songs like Voodoo Child and Purple Haze continue to be popular over generations. Hendrix, however, gave in to his deadly drug addiction on September 18, 1970 in a London hotel room, when he died having asphyxiated on his own vomit.

Founding member of the band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is the most recent rock icon. The picture-perfect image Punk star, Cobain's band, Nirvana, has several hits to their credit, including Smells like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are. Cobain was known to suffer from depression, and had a life-long battle with drug addiction. He committed suicide by shooting himself, while under the influence of drugs.
