The fashion high five

Close on the heels of the Bangalore Fashion Week comes another fashion extravaganza in the city that will see eight national designers showcase their Autumn/Winter collection. Mid Day caught up with five of them before their arrival in the cityReena Dhaka from DelhiThe Collection: A women's western pr t-a-porter line with great focus on print. The 25 garments have bold prints like pouting lips and extensive use of lines. The collection is modern with influences from the late 60s and 70s. There will also be a few pieces from the resort line. Comprising mostly of dresses, long skirts and bottoms, some of which are clinched at the waist, the collection premieres in Bangalore. Fabrics: Silk, crepes, jerseys, polyester, spandex and chiffon. Colour chart: purple, china blue, fuchsia, grey and black On Bangalore: I haven't been there in the last three years and am excited about showcasing the collection there as I have a lot of clients in the city. Showstopper: My showstoppers are my clothes. Music: DJ Jayant from Delhi has created a piece for me which blends elements of tradition with modernity.Rohit Gandhi Rahul Khanna from DelhiThe Collection: Western wear evening for the festive season with a lot of shine and matte and structure in it. There will be structured jackets, jumpsuits, skirts, short and long dresses, basically everything a woman desires, in fitted silhouettes. For the men, all the six garments come with different jackets.Rahul KhannaThe Inspiration: The collection is called Amazement as each garment amazes you with their intricate detailing.Colour chart: neutral, gold, copper, silver, sand and the designer duo's favorite hue, grey.Fabrics: Flowy fabrics like chiffon and silk. For the men, there's fine wool. Music: It's new age rock remixed by international DJs. It's dark with geometric graphicsu00a0 forming the backdrop. On Bangalore: We have many friends and clients in Bangalore and you need a ring side view of the clothes to appreciate them. This is not something we are saying, but our friend Queenie Dhody said this about the collection when it premiered in Mumbai.Showstopper: Not yet decided. Anand Kabra from HyderabadThe Collection: It's an extension of my Fall Winter and resort lines called No More Masks. There are Western and Indian silhouettes for well-shaped silhouettes like shirts, suits, trousers, evening dresses, short dresses, throws, lehenga sarees, wraps, lungis and kurtas.The Inspiration: I was inspired by the anthology of poetry, No More Masks. This is my social commentary on what's going on around us. I think the era of bullshit is over. Packaging and marketing had become such a gimmick that now people are returning to the basics. Images from the glass window at the Notre Dame cathedral triggered off a thought process in me. What I saw from the window was fragment. The prints we have developed for this collection, that of mosaic tiles, have been inspired by this thought process. Colour chart: Quite monochromatic with ivory, dark chcolatey black along with tangerine and yellow.Fabrics: I needed transparency and crispness in the collection. So there's quite a good mix of fabrics inu00a0 silk organza,u00a0 satin silk, georgettes, tulle, silk jerseys, gold and lurexShowstopper: I love my models. They do the best job. It's all about clothes and fashion for me. Having a Bollywood actress as a show stopper has never been an option.Vikram Phadnis from MumbaiThe collection: It's a dramatic, festive fusion line called A passage to India. Every garment shows a different mood. It's a diffusion line with kurtas, jackets, interesting shaded sarees with corsets and lehengas. I have gone easy on the bling that people usually associate my clothes with. The silhouettes are flowy. There are also a few Jalabiyas that Arambic women wear. Colour chart: gold, navy blue, burgundy and black.Fabrics: Net, velvet, georgette brocades. For the two men's sherwanis, I have used jet black.Music: I create my own music every year. It's a fusion track with birds chirping, drums rolling and high beats. On Bangalore: I don't look at the city as an ultimate selling point. I have got great appreciation from Bangalore. It's a city that always appreciates right kind of clothes. They like seeing practical clothes on the ramp and not great looking clothes they can't wear.Showstopper: Someone from Bollywood.Gavin Miguel from MumbaiThe Collection: It's called Dark Earth. The focus is on gowns with detailing in the neckline and at the back. It's inbetween couture and pr t. There are new age shapes on the hip and chest and no-sleeve shifts. We have specially designed accessories for the hand with textured and weathered leather in graphic shapes. The Inspiration: In life, everyone is in search of something till the time they find it.One keeps digging into the earth. This is an amalgamation of my life story as well. I was rudderless and searching till I found my wife. My wife is my diamond - something you find at the core of the earth. She's a special woman. I have gone through different phases of my life and stopped searching when I found her. Within layers in the earth are beautiful elements like petrol, gold, diamonds, silver and magnesium. You also get water which is the source of life. That's why super model Carol Gracias starts the show with a blue dreamy, surreal gown to symbolise water. Colour chart: There's a hint of blue in all the garments to add that spark. My colour palette starts with earthy tones and moves on to dark colours. There's sand, beiges, champagne tone, red earth, rusk, navy and ink blue. The deeper you dig, the richer the colours are.u00a0 Fabrics: French chiffons, georgettes, silk, metallic fabric, textured fabricsMusic: Quite dramatic. There are these sounds thatu00a0 reverberate into the room and then slip into old age music as that was the time when people were digging for diamonds. There's also Beethoven and opera at the end. I'm paying a tribute to Amy Winehouse by starting my show with Back to Black.u00a0u00a0 On Bangalore: Bangaloreans are stylish and not loud. Their sense of style is subtle and chic. I made a special request to show in Bangalore. We have had some of the best models (Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta and recently Dyana Erappa) emerge from the city. Showstopper: Model turned actress Lisa Haydon. I selected her as there's an element of mystery to her which goes well with my collection. She'll wear a tulle gown in a mix of grey and blackLisaSpeakBangalore is one of my favourite cities. I always look forward to coming here. This time it's special as I'm walking for Gavin who I happen to be a big fan of. Gavin is a fantastic designer. I can always trust him to make gowns that are feminine yet strong and fit like a dream.
