Fat boy slim make it small

Satish Kaushik has been a heavyweight actor in every way. But he has all intentions of changing that - well at least where his weight is concerned.

The actor who has lost over 15 kilos in the last year and hasn't missed even one day of exercise since last June, is on a mission to slim down.

Apart from wanting to be fit and healthy, Satish also hopes that the weight loss will help him reinvent himself and keep him from being typecast as the roly-poly actor who can only play comic roles.

He opens up to CS during a workout session:

Through the thick and thin
I regret the fact that I ignored my health for so many years. Anilji (Kapoor), who probably is as slim today as he was in his prime, used to keep telling me to avoid eating samosas on the sets and to hit the gym, but I never really bothered. But now I've come to realise that if I don't lose weight, the young brigade will take over and I want to be in the race because I am very passionate about what I do. Today, every film is made on a budget of a few crores, and the least that I can do is to look good in it. I am not aspiring to look like a Richard Gere, but I think it's important for me to look presentable. Now, I have also become particular about what I eat. I have also cut down on my drinks by about 80 percent.

Gym jam
I haven't missed a single day of exercise since last June, even if it meant going to the gym at 12:30am. In fact, I'm so hooked on to gymming that I carry a workout schedule with me on my phone - it's like my prescription. When I'm in some other city, I walk into a gym and ask the trainer there to help me with my training. Just the other day I met Shekhar Kapoor (director) and he was really surprised to see a slimmer me. On the day of the India-Pakistan clash, David (Dhawan) couldn't help saying that I'd lost so much weight. I keep bumping into Shahid (Kapoor) at the gym and he always tells me, 'Satish uncle, you have pulled down. Keep at it.'

What's so funny
I hope that my new avatar helps me to be perceived as a more serious actor. I'm looking at acting in Dev's (Benegal) next film, wherein I'm required to look much fitter. I have another eight-nine months to go, so I hope that I can achieve the target set for me. I think that my potential as a serious actor hasn't been fully tapped. Maybe my colleagues have been more fortunate than me in this regard. My fans tell me that they love my smiling face. But I also have a serious side to me. Maybe, my weight loss will help me to break out of the funnyman mould.
