Delhi's delis are a rather ignored lot, and it doesn't seem like the new ones are going to change that. Smoke House Grill, otherwise an ever-favourite with night prowlers, fails to woo with its deli outlet in Vasant Kunj. They say they've tried their best to bring back the "grill effect in a relaxed ambience,"u00a0 but it's only the latter half that impresses. More ahead.u00a0u00a0
Food
Since the cuisine is strictly European, you get to select fromu00a0 pastas, sandwiches, hot dogs and burgers.
Predictable. The asparagus-grape salad and roast garlic and plum tomato pasta (Rs 240 each) were average.
Our next picks, fresh porcini mac n cheese (Rs 410) and Cambodian basa plus lemon (Rs 450), however, tasted heavenly.
We also tried the smoked cottage cheese double burger (Rs 280), which was so-so. Other options include smoked chicken plus oregano burger (Rs 350), German wurstel hot dog (Rs 350), marinated deli vegetables gruyere (Rs 280), devilled liver of lamb (Rs 280) and Turkey Pastrami with black pepper gouda (Rs 410).

The smoked tomato brie (Rs 280) sandwich makes for a good second helping. The open kitchen, disappointingly, is an open ground for flies, so make sure your tables are cleaned with every order you place.
The desserts take your mind off that, though. Even as we picked up the good old tiramisu (Rs 130) and cheesecake of the day (Rs 150), they proved different. Hot chocolate fondantu00a0 (Rs 210) and kahlua mousse torte (Rs 130) are other promising picks. For those who hit the eatery in the morning, a special breakfast comprising combos like pancakes with maple syrup and fresh cream (Rs 180) and granola chunks (Rs150) wait to be devoured.
DrinksTeetotalers can sip on a variety of juices and mocktails with infusions of kiwi, cantaloupe melon, jasmine and lemonade. The apple-soaked mojito (Rs 170) and three two tango each priced at Rs 150, are our recommendations. The fresh fruit smoothies are tasty, too, especially the blueberry smoothie, stressbuster smoothie and soul smoothie (Rs 175 each).
AmbienceThe 80-seater eatery provides an alfresco setting overlooking the opulent Emporio Mall. Inside, an array of hand-painted drawings on wall by artist Ayaz Basrai hold your attention, as you spot interesting themes like misplaced letters, book titles, random trivia and eclectic symbols. The music is more of jazz, just as the rest of the place.
