The force of the impact sent Darde flying. The driver ran away from the spot. Darde sustained severe injuries to the head and other parts of the body.

His colleagues and others rushed him to Nanavati Hospital. Constable Dinesh Ahwad, who was standing on the opposite side of the road, said, "The car jumped the signal and Darde tried to stop it.

Police file a panchnama where a traffic police was hit by a speeding car opposite Milan mall early this morning.

The car was in great speed and it was impossible to stop it. We then rushed him to the hospital."

Other eyewitnesses said a few boys tried to chase the car, but the car was in great speed. There were two people in the car, they added.

The car couldn't be stopped at any other place either because the police started a nakabandi only after 10.15 pm, as they were informed about the accident much later.

In fact, they learnt about the incident after Nanavati Hospital authorities informed them about it.

Senior police inspector Madhukar Chaudhari of the Santacruz police station said, "We have got the number of the car (MH01-3825) and will get the name and address of the owner from the RTO.

This will help us to nab the accused. Darde is still unconscious." Doctors at Nanavati said Darde was still critical.
