Going potty over pottery: Shalan at her studio. |
John Abraham's best friend Vikram Dere's mother Shalan, began dabbling in pottery and ceramic works as a pastime. Slowly, it developed into a full-time business.
She has been in the business for over a decade, and was operating out of home. It's only now that she has opened up a studiou00a0Potters Place following John's advice.u00a0
The actor was a media buyer in a top agency before he became an actor, and knows how to market products and brands.
Creating awarenessShalan says, "John is like family and is helping me out but not in the capacity of a celebrity. Even if he was doing anything else, he would've been here in full support. It was John who told me that I need to make some noise about my art.
He made me aware that people have to know that we exist, and only then will they come to the studio.
He told me that I need to create awareness about my work and only then would people know of the studio, visit it, and then recommend it to family and friends. John is helping with the same."
Shalan says, "Ceramic is an art form but because the knowledge level is less. People don't think of it like that. But in the recent years that seems to be changing."
The most expensive thing in her studio is a 25,000/- bench with five people sitting on it and she says about the preparation of the same, "See the main thing in this is the bench and it took me four trials and the fourth one survived. Other than that it is relative to put a time to an art piece."
