Spain striker David Villa scored the only goal of their last 16 clash against Portugal yesterday. |
"It was one of my best goals because it got us through to the next round," Villa said. "I am very happy for the win, although we suffered a lot," added Villa. "We deserved to win, though, so I believe the result is fair.
"Individually, they have two excellent central defenders, but luckily we were able to take one of our chances.
"My aim is to keep scoring like this, especially in the big matches, so we can advance through the tournament.
"I thank the fans for their support. We have kept on improving as a side after the loss to Switzerland in the opening match."
The goal will be all the more pleasing as it came against a side that had not conceded a goal in the World Cup so far. Portugal may not have the offensive prowess of Spain or Argentina but they boasted of a defence which is as good, if not better than that of Brazil.
Villa saw his first shot blocked by Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo, but on the rebound, he coolly slotted home with his right foot.
The striker's overall performance was also key, however, as he selflessly stretched the play by coming in from the flank and offered protection to the midfield.
And Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was quick to appreciate Villa's all-round display.
"David scored that goal which was enough for us to qualify," Del Bosque said.
"But I shoulder underline the great work he has done because he's also contributed in other ways, for example defensively.
"That was extremely important tonight. There are three areas a team has to dominate to win. We controlled the ball, had depth to our game and a solid defence as well."
